Texturing Hammer- Tools of the Trade

Jewelry design is a continuous learning experience for me. There are literally hundreds of tools that each help  designers personalize our craft. This is the first in a series of blogs about several of the tools that I use frequently.

Texturing Hammer

Texturing Hammers: This particular type of hammer is used specifically to add design elements to a piece of jewelry. There are several hammers like this that are specifically created to texture. But other options are available. The  rounded end of a a standard ball peen hammer works nicely, too.

Once my piece of metal is annealed (heated to soften) and shaped, I choose the ‘look’ I want to accomplish.  Depending upon the thickness of the silver or copper, sometimes the piece needs to be annealed several times before continuing the texture. I LOVE this technique and am constantly wowed by the different designs I can create. Click on the photo to view one of my textured bracelets.
