Coral: Myths and Legends

From the Heart NecklaceCoral originates from the Sea and is not considered a gemstone. However, it is widely used in jewelry design.

Coral is actually a skeleton secreted by small sea animals called polyps. Red coral was once traded throughout Europe and India. It is said to be able to calm the Sea. When worn it was thought to stop bleeding.  Coral is becoming harder to obtain and most of what you find today in jewelry design has been dyed to give it the rich red colors.

Since coral is such a soft material, it needs to be treated gently! Don’t use jewelry cloths that contain polishing substances. This will discolor it.
